American University has maintained a commitment to its values over the years, with particular attention paid to human rights and dignity, social justice, environmental protection, diversity, and individual freedom. In particular, AU has revisited their commitment to environmental protection, making some changes to improve the way the university uses the planet’s resources and to educate the campus community about sustainability, health, and operational improvements.

Facilities Management recently hired a new Sustainability Coordinator to work to communicate the green initiatives on AU's campus, and to identify new opportunities to become a more sustainable university. The position provides the leadership, administrative support and coordination appropriate to develop, maintain and enhance environmental stewardship within the campus community and among its constituencies.
